Martha Kruse, Laconia NH author and Phyllis L. Stibler, New Castle illustrator

Laconia NH author Martha Kruse and New Castle illustrator Phyllis L. Stibler have published two children’s book in a series featuring the natural world and history of NH with a young child’s curiosity and imagination. “Whispers on Winnipesaukee,” published in the fall of 2017, and “Whispers on the Seacoast,” published August 2018, cover ecology, conservation and activities that are special to our state. Kruse and Stibler have created an adult program (could be of interest to young adults who like to draw and write) that covers the learning curve of book publishing and the illustration process of inspiration/vision/technique. Program is approximately 60 minutes, with about 25 images, for groups of 10 to 60. The books are 44 pages, hard cover.

Online Book Logging

Thank you Kayla Morin, Children’s Services at the Goodwin Library in Farmington for sharing the results of your query about online book logging. She reported the following responses:
We’ve had great success with a free system called Reader Zone.  It logs books and other types of reading goals.  The people who run it are always adding new features and are very attentive to requests.
The system is free and there are no ads in the app or on the website.  You, as a reading program organizer, will receive emails for products offered by Children’s Bookstore if you decide to use the service.
You can see it at www.readerzone.org

Hi Kayla, I highly recommend Engaged Patrons. Their summer reading log is Engaged Readers, and the service is free to libraries who receive less than $1 million per year in total income. We have used it for several years ,and the support is quite good. We used to use Evanced which is pricey and way too complicated for what we needed.

Supercharged Storytimes Learning Group(s) Begin

This course will Supercharge your Storytimes using early literacy strategies that prepare children to learn to read, and it’s offered entirely Free to you. Working through the self-paced course available from WebJunction together in a learning group will provide you with motivation to stay on track and a place to share ideas and insights with your New Hampshire peers.
The course is comprised of six modules and the learning group will allow two weeks in between modules for the applied learning. There is 6+ hours of video throughout the entire six modules and you should plan for 3 hours of learning within each module.
Once you register here, I will send you a code to login to our learning group’s Google Classroom. Please introduce yourself before we begin any modules. Module Discussions will be posted:
Module 1 Wednesday, Jan. 9
Module 2 Wednesday, Jan 23
Module 3 Wednesday, Feb 6
Module 4, Wednesday, Feb 20
Module 5, Wednesday, March 6
Module 6, Wednesday, March 20
A certificate of completion will be issued by myself with the requirement of one response weekly.

I most likely will break this up into regional learning groups for easier access to your peers and our in-person meeting in the spring.

Looking forward to being your facilitator or guide through the structure and pace of the course material. Please email me at Deborah.Dutcher@dncr.nh.gov with any questions or concerns.
